Inspired by Alma Thomas: Life, Color & Abstract Expression

Event Details

Inspired by Alma Thomas: Life, Color & Abstract Expression is an engaging adult art program that explores the life, career, and legacy of pioneering abstract artist Alma Thomas. Participants begin with an illustrated discussion of Thomas’s journey as an educator, her role in the Washington Color School, and her groundbreaking achievements as a Black woman in the art world.

Following the art talk, participants create their own abstract artwork inspired by Thomas’s signature style—bold color palettes, rhythmic brushstrokes, and mosaic-like patterns. The hands-on portion focuses on creative exploration rather than replication, encouraging participants to interpret Thomas’s techniques through their own personal expression.

Participants will:

  • Learn about Alma Thomas’s life, influences, and artistic impact

  • Examine key elements of her abstract style and use of color

  • Experiment with color theory, pattern, and repetition

  • Create an original abstract artwork inspired by her techniques

  • Reflect on art as a form of personal and cultural expression

This program is welcoming to all skill levels and emphasizes creativity, appreciation of art history, and mindful making in a relaxed, supportive environment.
