Hooked on History

If you are looking to read and talk about history, this is the book group for you!

Each season we will read non-fiction and fiction on a certain topic or era. For the Spring, we will read Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. For our second meeting on Monday, July 22 we will read from a list of books that covers the slave trade, slavery, African history, British colonization, and African American history.  That meeting will be Monday, July 22 at 7:00 pm.

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

Two half-sisters are born in different villages in 18th century Ghana.  Effia is married off to an Englishman who lives in the comfort of the Cape Coast Castle, while Esi is imprisoned below her in the castle’s dungeons, sold into the booming slave trade.  One thread of the novels follows Effia’s descendants in Ghana; the other follows Esi’s in America.  Both provide a searing look at the long legacy of the slave trade.
